The George Wythe Maroons claimed the Mountain Empire District golf tournament Thursday afternoon at the Wytheville Golf Club. The Maroons were led by sophomore Channing Blevins, who fired an even par round of 70. Blevins played solid golf hitting 15 of 18 greens in regulation.
Carter Vance of Auburn led the Eagles, by shooting an even par round of 70. Blevins won the medalist playoff on the first hole by rolling a birdie putt; claiming the medalist honor.
As a team, George Wythe fired a score of 291 to defeat Auburn by 27 strokes. The Maroons are a young team made up of 4 sophomores and 2 freshmen. The Maroons are hopeful to make it back to the 1A state tournament; however, they will have to make it out of the regional tournament next week to get to Harrisonburg.
